L&rsquo;un de ses principaux clients est l&rsquo;Espagne, avec pas moins de 24 112 tonnes import\u00e9es au premier trimestre 2022. Ces chiffres font du saumon le deuxi\u00e8me poisson le plus consomm\u00e9 en Espagne, apr\u00e8s le Merlu (<a href=\"https:\/\/es.statista.com\/estadisticas\/556726\/consumo-de-pescado-por-los-hogares-espanoles-por-tipo\/#:~:text=La%20merluza%20y%20la%20pescadilla,consumido%20por%20los%20hogares%20espa%C3%B1oles.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statista<\/a>). En France, il fait \u00e9galement partie du top 2 des poissons les plus consomm\u00e9s. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Fish_cages.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikimedia commons<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>L&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 2019 a \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e par l&rsquo;efflorescence phytoplanctonique la plus meurtri\u00e8re jamais enregistr\u00e9e en Norv\u00e8ge (et en Europe du Nord en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral!).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plus de 8 millions de saumons sont morts entre mai et juin (14 500 tonnes soit 300 millions de dollars) dans la r\u00e9gion des Lofoten et pr\u00e8s de Troms\u00f8. Par le pass\u00e9, des efflorescences avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 touch\u00e9 les \u00e9levages de saumons, mais jamais dans de telles proportions. Le coupable? Une microalgue minuscule de seulement 3-8 microns du groupe des haptophytes et nomm\u00e9e <em>Chrysochromulina leadbeateri<\/em>. Comme Othar (le cheval d&rsquo;Attila), sa renomm\u00e9e la pr\u00e9c\u00e8de, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle passe aucun saumon ne survit.<\/p>\n<p>Ces efflorescences ichtyotoxiques sont sporadiques et impr\u00e9visibles. Contrairement aux prolif\u00e9rations de dinoflagell\u00e9s et des diatom\u00e9es qui sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement majoritaires en Europe, dans le Nord de l&rsquo;Europe les haptophytes ichtyotoxiques constituent le danger majeur pour la pisciculture.<\/p>\n<p>La s\u00e9rie de catastrophes a commenc\u00e9 au printemps 1988 avec la prolif\u00e9ration de <em>Prymnesium polylepis<\/em> (alors <em>Chrysochromulina polylepis<\/em>), qui a endommag\u00e9 les stocks sauvages de cabillaud, de saumon et les \u00e9levages de saumon. Non seulement les poissons sont morts, mais tout ce qui vit jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 20 m\u00e8tres de profondeur a subi les cons\u00e9quences de cette prolif\u00e9ration : mollusques, \u00e9chinodermes, ascidies, cnidaires, \u00e9ponges. M\u00eame les algues rouges ont souffert des cons\u00e9quences. L&rsquo;efflorescence a atteint des abondances exceptionnelles (50-100 millions de cellules\/L), mais \u00e9tonnament sans colorer l&rsquo;eau de mer. L&rsquo;explication de l&rsquo;absence de mar\u00e9es rouges est simple : <em>C. leadbeateri<\/em> se trouvait sous la surface, \u00e0 plusieurs m\u00e8tres de profondeur dans une fine couche tr\u00e8s concentr\u00e9e et proche de la pycnocline. <em>Cette efflorescence n&rsquo;a eu qu&rsquo;une seule bonne cons\u00e9quence : la mise en place du syst\u00e8me norv\u00e9gien de surveillance des microalgues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Les conditions qui ont permis \u00e0 l&rsquo;efflorescence de 1988 de se produire \u00e9taient un r\u00e9gime de vent exceptionnellement calme + une forte stratification dans la couche de surface (due \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e et \u00e0 une faible salinit\u00e9 li\u00e9e \u00e0 de forts rejets d&rsquo;eaux int\u00e9rieures) + une forte teneur en nutriments + une augmentation saisonni\u00e8re de la lumi\u00e8re et peu de pr\u00e9dateurs dans le plancton. En 2000, un article de Gj\u00f8s\u00e6ter et al. a pass\u00e9 en revue les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts et les cons\u00e9quences de cette prolif\u00e9ration et a pos\u00e9 la question suivante: \u00ab\u00a0HAS ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED BEFORE and IS IT LIKELY TO HAPPEN AGAIN?\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb (<em>Y a-t-il eu un \u00e9pisode semblable auparavant et est-il probable que cela se reproduise<\/em>?\u00a0\u00bb)<\/p>\n<p>Et sa r\u00e9ponse a \u00e9t\u00e9: \u00ab\u00a0<em>Oui, mais ils \u00e9taient faibles, sans dommages observables, mais l\u2019environnement futur sera possiblement favorables \u00e0 de nouvelles efflorescences similaires<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La situation \u00e0 la fin du 20e si\u00e8cle \u00e9tait pr\u00e9occupante.<\/strong> Dans les ann\u00e9es 1990, des haptophytes ichtyotoxiques comme <em>Prymnesium parvum<\/em> et <em>Chrysochromulina leadbeateri<\/em> ont caus\u00e9 de nouvelles pertes, obligeant \u00e0 d\u00e9placer les cages vers d&rsquo;autres zones (voire d&rsquo;autres profondeurs) pour minimiser les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000373644.locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HAN<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Comme je l&rsquo;ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 mentionn\u00e9, les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 historiques.<\/strong> Cependant, la croissance de l&rsquo;\u00e9levage de saumon en Norv\u00e8ge au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9norme. De 170 000 tonnes de saumon en 1990, on est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 1,5 million de tonnes en 2021. Il est donc probable que l&rsquo;impact le plus important de l&rsquo;efflorescence en 2019 soit principalement d\u00fb \u00e0 l&rsquo;augmentation du nombre d&rsquo;\u00e9levages plut\u00f4t qu&rsquo;\u00e0 une r\u00e9elle expansion g\u00e9ographique de <em>C. leadbeateri<\/em>. Par ailleurs, contrairement \u00e0 1988, aucune mortalit\u00e9 dans les populations de poissons sauvages n&rsquo;a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9e en 2019. (2022).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Les concentrations maximales de <em>C. leadbeateri<\/em> \u00e9taient inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles de <em>P. polylepis<\/em> en 1988 (20-30 millions de cellules\/L). Mais peu importe&#8230;1 \u00e0 2 millions de cellules\/L suffisent pour modifier le comportement du poisson. <strong>Et des concentrations sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 2 ou 3 millions de cellules\/L se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9es mortelles selon les observations de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque.<\/strong> En fait, dans les \u00e9levages touch\u00e9s, on a observ\u00e9 une br\u00e8ve p\u00e9riode de mouvements anormaux des saumons, suivie d&rsquo;une mortalit\u00e9 abrupte. Chez des organismes similaires comme <em>P. polylepis<\/em>, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu&rsquo;elles ne sont pas sp\u00e9cifiques et qu&rsquo;en plus d&rsquo;endommager les poissons et les invert\u00e9br\u00e9s, elles inhibent \u00e9galement l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 du plancton: des bact\u00e9ries aux pr\u00e9dateurs potentiels (cili\u00e9s, cop\u00e9podes) en passant par les microalgues.<\/p>\n<p>Les effets d&rsquo;une telle toxicit\u00e9 conf\u00e8rent un avantage comp\u00e9titif qui favoriserait le d\u00e9veloppement d&rsquo;efflorescences monosp\u00e9cifiques (compos\u00e9es d\u2019une seule esp\u00e8ce). De m\u00eame, dans le cas de <em>P. polylepis<\/em>, la structure de ses toxines est \u00e9galement inconnue (bien que l&rsquo;on pense qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit de lipides et\/ou d&rsquo;acides gras ayant une activit\u00e9 h\u00e9molytique).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment ces prolif\u00e9rations \u00e9volueront-elles \u00e0 l&rsquo;avenir?<\/strong> Les tendances climatiques dans la r\u00e9gion pr\u00e9voient une augmentation des pr\u00e9cipitations et des temp\u00e9ratures en \u00e9t\u00e9. Cela favoriserait la stratification et les conditions nutritives qui ont stimul\u00e9 les prolif\u00e9rations d&rsquo;haptophytes ichtyotoxiques dans le pass\u00e9. Ces organismes sont capables de se d\u00e9placer dans une colonne d&rsquo;eau stratifi\u00e9e gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leurs flagelles, dominant ainsi d&rsquo;autres organismes planctoniques plus grands et moins mobiles, tels que les diatom\u00e9es. Ce climat \u00ab\u00a0plus doux\u00a0\u00bb augmenterait donc le risque de conditions favorables au d\u00e9veloppement de ces efflorescences et la possibilit\u00e9 qu&rsquo;elles s&rsquo;\u00e9tendent aux zones subarctiques et arctiques dans les d\u00e9cennies \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Referencias:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gj\u00f8s\u00e6ter J. et col.
