En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral on pense d&rsquo;abord aux \u00e9missions des voitures ou de l&rsquo;industrie, mais les cendres et les gaz lib\u00e9r\u00e9s dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re lors d&rsquo;une \u00e9ruption volcanique, ou les particules provenant du d\u00e9sert peuvent \u00e9galement \u00eatre nocifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lors de la r\u00e9cente \u00e9ruption du Cumbre Vieja, le pr\u00e9sident de l&rsquo;ordre des m\u00e9decins de l&rsquo;\u00eele de Las Palmas a soulign\u00e9 le risque d&rsquo;inhalation de cendres volcaniques:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab\u00a0&#8230;Ce sont des min\u00e9raux [\u2026] comme des pierres microscopiques avec des arr\u00eates, des aiguilles. Ces particules fines sont beaucoup plus agressives [<em>que les cendres d&rsquo;un feu de for\u00eat<\/em>]. Mais dans ce cas, les d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ments sont subis par les poissons et les \u201c\u00e9pines\u00a0\u00bb sont d&rsquo;origine biologique: <strong>les diatom\u00e9es<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les prolif\u00e9rations de microalgues peuvent \u00eatre nocives, m\u00eame si celles-ci ne produisent pas de toxines.&nbsp;<em>A priori<\/em>&nbsp;personne ne penserait qu&rsquo;une cellule dans la mer puisse repr\u00e9senter une menace ou un risque physique pour un poisson, un oiseau ou un mammif\u00e8re. Mais tout est une question de dose, et dans le cas des esp\u00e8ces toxiques, nous savons que leurs toxines peuvent s&rsquo;accumuler dans la cha\u00eene alimentaire.&nbsp;<em><em>Au-del\u00e0 d&rsquo;un certain seuil, ils peuvent empoisonner les organismes des niveaux sup\u00e9rieurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les efflorescences de phytoplancton peuvent \u00e9galement \u00eatre nuisibles en consommant de l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne lors de la d\u00e9composition de la mati\u00e8re organique lors du d\u00e9clin de leurs populations. <em>Mais il existe un autre sc\u00e9nario que nous n&rsquo;avons pas encore abord\u00e9 dans ce blog<\/em>: <strong>les efflorescences abrasives<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certaines microalgues peuvent \u00eatre nuisibles car elles agissent comme du \u00ab\u00a0papier de verre microscopique\u00a0\u00bb. Ce genre de diatom\u00e9es est tr\u00e8s commun et abondant sur l\u2019ensemble des c\u00f4tes de la plan\u00e8te. C&rsquo;est l&rsquo;un des genres les plus diversifi\u00e9, avec plus de 400 esp\u00e8ces. Les <em>Chaetoceros<\/em> poss\u00e8dent des \u00e9pines creuses (<em>setae<\/em>) qui leur permettent d&rsquo;augmenter leur surface et leur flottabilit\u00e9. <em>Elles forment souvent des cha\u00eenes qui, ensemble, ressemblent \u00e0 des mille-pattes microscopiques.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le probl\u00e8me avec des esp\u00e8ces telles que <em>Chaetoceros coarctatus<\/em> est qu&rsquo;elles poss\u00e8dent des setae \u00ab\u00a0arm\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb, avec des extensions siliceuses qui rendent leurs prolif\u00e9rations abrasives et posent un risque pour la faune marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les \u00e9pines (ou <em>setae<\/em>) peuvent avoir des chloroplastes qui permettent de les diff\u00e9rencier en deux sous-genres : <em>Hyalochaete <\/em>(\u00ab\u00a0hyalo\u00a0\u00bb signifie cristallin ; \u00e9pines fines sans chloroplastes) et <em>Phaeoceros<\/em> (\u00e9pines \u00e9paisses avec chloroplastes ; \u00ab\u00a0phaeo\u00a0\u00bb signifie brun fonc\u00e9, pigment\u00e9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><strong><em>Chaetoceros coarctatus fait partie des Phaeoceros<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em><\/strong>Ses \u00e9pines, en plus d&rsquo;\u00eatre arm\u00e9es ou de servir de \u201cflotteur\u201d, comprennent des chloroplastes qui servent de panneaux solaires captant la lumi\u00e8re pour la photosynth\u00e8se.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les microscopes optiques ne permettent pas de distinguer la surface des \u00e9pines en d\u00e9tail, pour cela il faut un microscope \u00e9lectronique. Et c&rsquo;est cet outil qui a permis de d\u00e9crire leur structure et leur fonction dans un article r\u00e9cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La plupart des \u00e9pines de <em>C. coarctatus<\/em> ne sont pas rondes mais hexagonales, avec de nombreux nano-pores. Leur surface est lisse \u00e0 la base, juste l\u00e0 o\u00f9 ils \u00e9mergent de la cellule. (2022).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des \u00e9pines, les nano-pores sont r\u00e9partis selon un maillage ordonn\u00e9 et permettent \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans les \u00e9pines. Cette distribution devient d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9e vers la pointe et \u00e0 l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur des \u00e9pines car il y a des pores qui se ferment. <em>La porosit\u00e9 augmente la r\u00e9sistance en prot\u00e9geant m\u00e9caniquement les cellules. Source: Lee et Lee (2011).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Au cours de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 et de l&rsquo;automne 2013, une vague de chaleur s&rsquo;est abattue sur le sud de l&rsquo;Australie. <\/strong>Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 cet \u00e9pisode, les m\u00e9dias ont fait \u00e9tat de milliers de mortalit\u00e9s de poissons sur 2 900 kilom\u00e8tres de c\u00f4tes. (2019).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il y a \u00e9galement eu des d\u00e9c\u00e8s de dauphins associ\u00e9s \u00e0 un virus, ou encore des mortalit\u00e9s excessives d&rsquo;ormeaux, mais celles-ci \u00e9taient li\u00e9es aux temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es en mer (27-30\u00b0C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Pour les poissons c\u2019\u00e9tait diff\u00e9rent\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La plupart des poissons qui sont arriv\u00e9s au laboratoire \u00e9taient en mauvais \u00e9tat et n&rsquo;ont pas pu \u00eatre examin\u00e9s correctement..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais l&rsquo;analyse de 8 poissons moribonds ou r\u00e9cemment morts a montr\u00e9 de graves l\u00e9sions dans leurs branchies, avec une septic\u00e9mie et une hyperplasie dans les tissus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans les \u00e9chantillons d&rsquo;eau, ils n&rsquo;ont trouv\u00e9 pratiquement aucune esp\u00e8ce de phytoplancton toxique ou nuisible, \u00e0 l&rsquo;exception de\u2026<strong><em>Chaetoceros coarctatus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pendant l&rsquo;un des pics de mortalit\u00e9, des abondances entre 200-2000 cellules\/litre de <strong><em>C. coarctatus<\/em><\/strong> ont \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9es. Cela ne semble pas \u00e9lev\u00e9, mais cette diatom\u00e9e abrasive peut provoquer des effets subl\u00e9taux avec seulement 400 cellules\/litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les dommages caus\u00e9s aux branchies et le stress qu&rsquo;ils provoquent peuvent entra\u00eener des infections bact\u00e9riennes et des sympt\u00f4mes tels que ceux observ\u00e9s chez ces poissons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En r\u00e9sum\u00e9,&nbsp;<strong>Roberts y col.<\/strong>&nbsp;ont conclu que le stress de la vague de chaleur, coupl\u00e9 \u00e0 la prolif\u00e9ration de&nbsp;<strong><em>Chaetoceros coarctatus<\/em><\/strong>, a conduit aux l\u00e9sions et infections des branchies et aux mortalit\u00e9s massives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>C&rsquo;est un petit nombre d&rsquo;individus qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 analys\u00e9<\/em> pour ce qui s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9 l\u00e0-bas, mais il n&rsquo;est pas toujours possible d&rsquo;obtenir des \u00e9chantillons importants quand on en a le plus besoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comme toujours en science, d&rsquo;autres \u00e9pisodes permettront \u00e0 l&rsquo;avenir de confirmer, de discuter ou d&rsquo;\u00e9tendre les conclusions, m\u00eame si <strong><em>Chaetoceros coarctatus <\/em><\/strong>sera toujours suspect\u00e9, <em>c&rsquo;est certain<\/em> !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>R\u00e9f\u00e9rences:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lee S.D. y Lee J.H.
