L&rsquo;ornithorynque est un exemple classique, une sorte de \u00ab\u00a0castor extraterrestre\u00a0\u00bb : un mammif\u00e8re venimeux au bec de canard et qui pond des \u0153ufs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les adultes n&rsquo;ont pas de dents et d\u00e9tectent leurs proies sous l&rsquo;eau par \u00e9lectro-r\u00e9ception. Mais qu&rsquo;est-ce que c&rsquo;est ? Un mammif\u00e8re ou un reptile ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Des \u00e9tudes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, notamment le s\u00e9quen\u00e7age du g\u00e9nome, sugg\u00e8rent que la branche \u00e9volutive des ornithorynques (monotr\u00e8mes) s&rsquo;est s\u00e9par\u00e9e des autres mammif\u00e8res il y a 166 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, avant l&rsquo;\u00e9mergence des marsupiaux et des placentaires dans une autre branche parall\u00e8le\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En remontant encore plus loin, on pense que les lign\u00e9es \u00e9volutives qui ont donn\u00e9 naissance aux mammif\u00e8res et aux reptiles (synapsides et sauropsides) ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 diverger il y a 315 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce qui se passe avec les ornithorynques, c&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;ils ont \u00e9volu\u00e9 <em>seuls en Australie<\/em>, conservant certaines caract\u00e9ristiques et en d\u00e9veloppant des caract\u00e9ristiques \u00ab\u00a0reptiliennes\u00a0\u00bb (par convergence \u00e9volutive).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un <em>casse-t\u00eate<\/em> qui a m\u00eame sembl\u00e9 \u00eatre une fraude pour les premiers naturalistes britanniques qui ont examin\u00e9 les restes d&rsquo;un sp\u00e9cimen \u00e0 la fin du 18e si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bien. Une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e en 2019 a d\u00e9couvert quelque chose d&rsquo;aussi bizarre qu&rsquo;un ornithorynque, mais cette fois parmi les dinoflagell\u00e9s. Son nom scientifique <em><strong>Centrodinium punctatum<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il ne s&rsquo;agit pas d\u2019une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce. Peu d&rsquo;individus avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9s dans des \u00e9chantillons naturels et, en raison du manque d&rsquo;informations, sa position taxonomique parmi les dinoflagell\u00e9s \u00e9tait pour le moins incertaine. Les microalgues sont class\u00e9es en combinant des caract\u00e8res morphologiques et mol\u00e9culaires. En l&rsquo;absence de donn\u00e9es g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, on a suppos\u00e9 qu&rsquo;il \u00e9tait proche d&rsquo;autres genres d&rsquo;apparence similaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2016, Li et col. (2019) ont isol\u00e9 deux souches de <em>Centrodinium punctatum<\/em> \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillons provenant de la mer de Chine orientale et ont obtenu des s\u00e9quences g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques pour caract\u00e9riser &#8211; enfin &#8211; une esp\u00e8ce de ce genre. Mais ici, nous avons un ornithorynque dans la pi\u00e8ce. Ou plut\u00f4t : un <em>Alexandrium <\/em>\u00e9cras\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mais comment expliquer la position de <em>Centrodinium punctatum <\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce r\u00e9sultat sugg\u00e8re que le genre Alexandrium n&rsquo;est pas monophyl\u00e9tique mais paraphyl\u00e9tique. C&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire que les esp\u00e8ces incluses dans le genre Alexandrium ne partagent pas forc\u00e9ment d&rsquo;anc\u00eatre commun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et c&rsquo;est un probl\u00e8me insoluble, du moins pour l&rsquo;instant. Pour \u00ab\u00a0corriger\u00a0\u00bb cette anomalie, il faudrait obtenir davantage d&rsquo;informations ou alors, soit diviser <em>Alexandrium <\/em>en plusieurs genres, soit l&rsquo;\u00e9tendre\/le red\u00e9finir pour y inclure l&rsquo;ornithorynque. D\u00e9sol\u00e9, <em>Centrodinium<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le premier essai ne s&rsquo;est pas fait attendre\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avec peu de temps pour se remettre du choc, <strong>G\u00f3mez et Artigas (2019) <\/strong>ont s\u00e9quenc\u00e9 deux autres esp\u00e8ces de <em>Centrodinium <\/em>et cette vision plus large de <em>Centrodinium <\/em>les a conduits \u00e0 proposer une division des esp\u00e8ces d&rsquo;<em>Alexandrium<\/em> en 4 genres (<em>Alexandrium<\/em>, <em>Gessnerium<\/em>, <em>Protogonyaulax <\/em>et <em>Episemicolon<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mais <em>Alexandrium <\/em>n&rsquo;est pas un genre quelconque.<em> <\/em><\/strong>Il comprend des esp\u00e8ces produisant des toxines paralysantes qui causent de graves dommages \u00e9conomiques et des risques pour la sant\u00e9 humaine et la faune marine dans le monde entier. Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Et c&rsquo;est tout le contraire qui s&rsquo;est produit. <\/em>En 2020, un article de r\u00e9ponse a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 par 50 auteurs <strong>(Mertens et col.)<\/strong> dont le titre ne laissait aucun doute sur le consensus : <strong>\u00abMorphological and phylogenetic data do not support the split of <em>Alexandrium <\/em>into four genera\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;ensemble des arguments ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9fut\u00e9s, aussi bien ceux morphologiques que g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, qui justifiaient la proposition de diviser <em>Alexandrium <\/em>en quatre genres. Je n&rsquo;entrerai pas dans les d\u00e9tails car ils ne sont pas pertinents et vous pouvez les trouver dans l&rsquo;article en question si votre int\u00e9r\u00eat vous conduit \u00e0 la taxonomie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il suffira de r\u00e9sumer que les caract\u00e8res morphologiques pour soutenir ces genres n&rsquo;\u00e9taient ni stables ni suffisants. Et pas seulement pour les 4 nouveaux, mais aussi pour s\u00e9parer <em>Centrodinium <\/em>de <em>Episemicolon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quant aux r\u00e9sultats g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, les critiques ont port\u00e9 sur le manque de r\u00e9solution et de robustesse n\u00e9cessaires dans les analyses pour reconstruire les relations \u00e9volutives entre ces genres. Comme l&rsquo;a dit Carl Sagan: \u201c<em>extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;alternative serait d&rsquo;\u00e9tendre <em>Alexandrium <\/em>et c&rsquo;est l&rsquo;id\u00e9e avanc\u00e9e par Mertens et col. \u00e0 la fin de leur article-r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 G\u00f3mez et Artigas. Mais il n&rsquo;y a toujours pas de nouvelles taxonomiques \u00e0 ce sujet\u2026 L&rsquo;int\u00e9gration de l&rsquo;ornithorynque ne doit pas \u00eatre une t\u00e2che facile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entre-temps, un nouvel article est sorti <strong>(Shin et col. 2020)<\/strong>, et il d\u00e9montre que <em>Centrodinium punctatum <\/em>produit des saxitoxines (toxines paralysantes; PSTs)\u2026 comme 14 autres esp\u00e8ces d\u2019<em>Alexandrium<\/em>. Qui sait ? Plus qu&rsquo;une surprise, cela pourrait \u00eatre \u00e0 l&rsquo;avenir un clou de plus \u00e0 planter pour le genre <em>Alexandrium <\/em>et clore l&rsquo;histoire d&rsquo;aujourd&rsquo;hui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>R\u00e9f\u00e9rences:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>G\u00f3mez F. et Artigas L.F.
