Oui, vous avez bien lu: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-51049471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environ 10 000 chameaux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9s pour prot\u00e9ger les populations humaines<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La situation \u00e9tait telle que \u00ab\u00a0<em>l&rsquo;Op\u00e9ration Rock Wallaby<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e : des milliers de kilos de pommes de terre et de carottes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 largu\u00e9s depuis des h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res afin que les colonies de ces marsupiaux puissent survivre apr\u00e8s la catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les incendies de 2019 illustrent les cons\u00e9quences des conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques extr\u00eames (s\u00e9cheresses prolong\u00e9es et temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es), devenant plus fr\u00e9quentes en raison du changement climatique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce que nous savons, c&rsquo;est que les grandes s\u00e9cheresses en Australie sont associ\u00e9es \u00e0 un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne similaire \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb qui se produit dans le Pacifique. Dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est appel\u00e9 \u00ab<strong>Dip\u00f4le de l&rsquo;Oc\u00e9an Indien (DOI)<\/strong>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est une modification p\u00e9riodique de la temp\u00e9rature de surface de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien. Pendant la phase positive, la temp\u00e9rature dans l&rsquo;ouest de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien est plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e, alors qu\u2019un refroidissement a lieu dans les eaux de l&rsquo;est de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pendant cette p\u00e9riode, l&rsquo;upwelling c\u00f4tier s&rsquo;intensifie et la temp\u00e9rature de surface de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien diminue, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;augmentation des aliz\u00e9s qui transportent les eaux de surface de l&rsquo;Oc\u00e9anie vers l&rsquo;Afrique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;intensit\u00e9 du DOI est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement maximale entre ao\u00fbt et octobre. Si l&rsquo;on ajoute \u00e0 cela l&rsquo;augmentation de la temp\u00e9rature due au changement climatique, on obtient <em>le cocktail parfait<\/em> pour la propagation des incendies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;Australie connait une p\u00e9riode de s\u00e9cheresse depuis 1995 &#8211; connue sous le nom de \u00ab\u00a0Big Dry\u00a0\u00bb \u2013 mais malgr\u00e9 cela, la zone touch\u00e9e par les incendies s&rsquo;\u00e9tait distingu\u00e9e au niveau mondial par une croissance de sa v\u00e9g\u00e9tation au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies. M\u00eame le rapport du GIEC \u00ab\u00a0<em>Changement climatique et terres<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (2019) avait reconnu cette am\u00e9lioration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Globally, greening trends (trends of increased photosynthetic activity in vegetation) have increased over the last 2\u20133 decades by 22\u201333%, particularly over China, India, many parts of Europe, central North America, southeast Brazil and southeast Australia.<\/p><cite>IPCC (2019)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kasatochi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16922\" width=\"318\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kasatochi.jpg 570w, https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/kasatochi-450x391.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><figcaption>Les volcans des Al\u00e9outiennes et de l&rsquo;Alaska. (2010).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mais les incendies sur terre peuvent-ils affecter la vie marine?<\/strong> <strong>Et si oui, comment?<\/strong> Et bien en fertilisant l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an, par exemple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les cendres des incendies ou des \u00e9ruptions volcaniques, le ruissellement des rivi\u00e8res, l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion ou les d\u00e9p\u00f4ts atmosph\u00e9riques, apportent tous des min\u00e9raux et des nutriments (comme le fer) qui sont essentiels \u00e0 la croissance du phytoplancton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le sable du d\u00e9sert agit \u00e9galement comme un engrais en mer. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est bien connu, mais ce n&rsquo;est que dans les ann\u00e9es 1990 qu&rsquo;il a \u00e9t\u00e9 sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 que les cendres volcaniques pouvaient \u00e9galement jouer un r\u00f4le dans le cycle du fer et dans la production primaire dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce domaine d&rsquo;\u00e9tude est si r\u00e9cent que la premi\u00e8re preuve d&rsquo;une relation de cause \u00e0 effet entre une \u00e9ruption volcanique et une efflorescence microalgale a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tablie en 2008 dans le Pacifique Nord-Est \u00e0 la suite de l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption du Kasatochi (un volcan situ\u00e9 dans les \u00eeles Al\u00e9outiennes, dans la ceinture de feu du Pacifique).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le Pacifique Nord-Est est une zone de faible productivit\u00e9 tout au long de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e en raison de la raret\u00e9 des nutriments comme le fer dans la couche \u00e9clair\u00e9e \u00e0 la surface de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Martin &amp; Fitzwater <\/strong>ont choisi cette r\u00e9gion pour confirmer l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se de la limitation en fer du phytoplancton en 1988. Source: Fig. 3 de Langmann et col. 2010).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La zone de de d\u00e9veloppement du phytoplancton d\u00e9tect\u00e9e par satellite a co\u00efncid\u00e9 avec le d\u00e9placement et le d\u00e9p\u00f4t atmosph\u00e9rique des cendres volcaniques de Kasatochi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais en plus de l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption, des conditions oc\u00e9anographiques favorables ont contribu\u00e9 au d\u00e9veloppement de l&rsquo;efflorescence phytoplanctonique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En effet, en \u00e9t\u00e9, la couche de m\u00e9lange de surface est r\u00e9duite \u00e0 20-40 m\u00e8tres, ce qui augmente la stabilit\u00e9 et l&rsquo;impact de la fertilisation, tous deux essentiels \u00e0 la prolif\u00e9ration du phytoplancton pendant des semaines\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Si l\u2019on s\u2019int\u00e9resse maintenant aux effets des cendres provenant d\u2019incendies, un exemple plus inqui\u00e9tant existe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 1997, une mortalit\u00e9 massive des r\u00e9cifs coralliens a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9e dans les \u00eeles Mentawai, au large de Sumatra (Indon\u00e9sie), suite \u00e0 une mar\u00e9e rouge de phytoplancton. Source: <a aria-label=\"everessencenutrition (se abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" href=\"https:\/\/everessencenutrition.com\/retreats\/swellwomen-mentawai-islands-surf-yoga-retreat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">everessencenutrition<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La mort des r\u00e9cifs \u00e9tait probablement li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019hypoxie (un manque d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne) associ\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin de la mar\u00e9e rouge et \u00e0 la d\u00e9composition de la mati\u00e8re organique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette relation de cause \u00e0 effet a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tay\u00e9e par des t\u00e9moignages locaux d\u00e9crivant la mort du r\u00e9cif et des poissons alors que la mer \u00e9tait devenue rouge (<a aria-label=\"nasa.gov (se abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/vision\/earth\/livingthings\/reef_mystery.html\" target=\"_blank\">nasa.gov<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La mar\u00e9e rouge fut immense : elle a recouvert l&rsquo;archipel des Mentawa\u00ef, long de 400 kilom\u00e8tres, et les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts qu&rsquo;elle a caus\u00e9s \u00e9taient si importants que presque tous les r\u00e9cifs et les poissons de la r\u00e9gion ont p\u00e9ri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Malheureusement, personne n&rsquo;a identifi\u00e9 la microalgue responsable de la mar\u00e9e rouge.
