Les abr\u00e9viations correspondent au noyau (n), au chloroplaste (c), \u00e0 la mitochondrie (m), \u00e0 la paroi cellulaire (cw), au granule d&rsquo;amidon (s) et au dictyosome (appareil de Golgi ; d).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En pleine croissance, ce sont de petites sph\u00e8res, mais avec une carence en nutriments, elles acqui\u00e8rent une forme trilob\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peu de temps apr\u00e8s, la d\u00e9couverte d&rsquo;un organisme similaire dans le lac Mono (Californie) a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 appel\u00e9&nbsp;<strong><em>Picocystis<\/em> sp.&nbsp;<\/strong>parce qu&rsquo;elle ne semblait pas tout \u00e0 fait la m\u00eame microalgue. (2002)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le lac Mono est un endroit \u00e9tonnant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il fait penser \u00e0 une \u0153uvre de Dal\u00ed et ses conditions environnementales ne sont pas moins remarquables\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quand je l&rsquo;ai vu, cela m&rsquo;a rappel\u00e9 la mer de Salton, dont nous avons discut\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;article intitul\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/2015\/01\/un-futuro-para-salton-sea.html\">Un futuro para Salton Sea<\/a> (Article en espagnol).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La mer de Salton est n\u00e9e d\u2019une erreur humaine (suite \u00e0 la rupture d\u2019un barrage) et est en train de mourir. Source: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artemia_monica#\/media\/File:Artemia_monica.jpg\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artemia_monica#\/media\/File:Artemia_monica.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 1941, les affluents qui alimentaient le lac ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tourn\u00e9s pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la demande croissante en eau de Los Angeles. <em>Et vous pouvez imaginer la suite<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans les 40 ann\u00e9es qui ont suivi, il a perdu la moiti\u00e9 de son volume mettant en \u00e9vidence les tufas (des formations calcaires en forme de chemin\u00e9e) de son lit. La salinit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 multipli\u00e9e par deux, le pH est mont\u00e9 \u00e0 9,8 <em>et pas un seul poisson ou vert\u00e9br\u00e9 n\u2019a surv\u00e9cu<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Face \u00e0 de tels changements, seules des mouches alcalines (<em>Ephydra hians<\/em>), une esp\u00e8ce de crustac\u00e9 unique au monde (<em>Artemia monica<\/em>), et les microalgues constituant leur principal r\u00e9gime alimentaire ont surv\u00e9cu:<em>&nbsp;<strong>les Picocystis<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces microalgues repr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 elles seules 50% de la production primaire du lac. <em>Et en hiver, elle ne descend g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas en dessous de 25%&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il y a aussi des diatom\u00e9es (<em>Nitzschia<\/em>) et des cyanobact\u00e9ries, mais la reine ind\u00e9tr\u00f4nable reste <strong><em>Picocystis<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et les Art\u00e9mias en raffolent ! En laboratoire, chacune d&rsquo;entre elles mange en moyenne 500 000 <em>Picocystis<\/em> par heure ! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les Art\u00e9mias elles-m\u00eames sont une ressource fondamentale pour les oiseaux sur la route migratoire du Pacifique de l&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique du Nord qui va de l&rsquo;Alaska \u00e0 la Patagonie. Source: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monolake.org\/today\/conservation-groups-sue-to-protect-migratory-birds\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.monolake.org\/today\/conservation-groups-sue-to-protect-migratory-birds\/\" target=\"_blank\">monolake.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le lac Mono \u00e9tait monomictique avant les ann\u00e9es 80\u2032. <\/strong>C&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire que la stratification de la couche sup\u00e9rieure form\u00e9e pendant la saison chaude se dissipait une seule fois par an, m\u00e9langeant et oxyg\u00e9nant ainsi ses eaux \u00e0 la fin de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais en 1982, la d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de l&rsquo;environnement et un \u00e9v\u00e9nement \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb intense ont initi\u00e9 une phase <strong>m\u00e9romictique<\/strong>: <em>une stratification de surface continue pendant 5 ann\u00e9es de suite.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et lorsque le m\u00e9lange des eaux profondes et peu profondes a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9tabli, une nouvelle catastrophe s&rsquo;est produite : l&rsquo;ammonium, le m\u00e9thane et le soufre accumul\u00e9s au fond ont provoqu\u00e9 l&rsquo;anoxie temporaire du lac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 1984, pendant cette stratification persistante, un maximum de chlorophylle de subsurface s&rsquo;est form\u00e9. Et dans des conditions o\u00f9 l&rsquo;on aurait pu s&rsquo;attendre \u00e0 des bact\u00e9ries photosynth\u00e9tiques anoxyg\u00e8nes, c\u2019\u00e9tait en fait une microalgue eucaryote qui \u00e9tait responsable de ce maximum&nbsp;de chlorophylle:&nbsp;<strong><em>Picocystis<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;sp.&nbsp;!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/PICOCYSTISj.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/PICOCYSTISj.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14565\" width=\"278\" height=\"260\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Dans la collection de cultures de microalgues de l\u2019Institut Oc\u00e9anographique Espagnol \u00e0 Vigo (CCVIEO, IEO Vigo) nous avons une souche de Mickey Mouse, pardon, de <em>Picocystis salinarum<\/em> (RCC3402). Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les <em>Picocystis<\/em> du lac Mono peuvent se d\u00e9velopper dans la p\u00e9nombre (&lt;0,1 % de la lumi\u00e8re de surface disponible en \u00e9t\u00e9), et donc prolif\u00e9rer \u00e0 des profondeurs allant jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 20 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ils supportent une gamme IMPRESSIONNANTE de salinit\u00e9s (0-260\u2030), et de pH (4-12) et tol\u00e8rent \u00e9galement bien les faibles niveaux d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette plasticit\u00e9 physiologique lui permet d&rsquo;\u00e9tablir des populations permanentes dans le lac, maintenant ainsi la production primaire, et supportant l&rsquo;\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me et les \u00eatres vivants qui en d\u00e9pendent : les Art\u00e9mia et les oiseaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Picocystis<\/em><\/strong> poss\u00e8de une autre propri\u00e9t\u00e9 surprenante: c\u2019est une chim\u00e8re dans sa composition pigmentaire. Chlorophylles et carot\u00e9no\u00efdes des algues vertes (chlorophylle b, violaxanthine, etc.) et d&rsquo;autres pigments de la lign\u00e9e \u00e9volutive rouge (diatoxanthine, alloxanthine et monadoxanthine, les deux derni\u00e8res \u00e9tant typiques des cryptophyc\u00e9es) sont pr\u00e9sents chez cette microalgue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Des ann\u00e9es plus tard, des coll\u00e8gues de la Station Biologique de Roscoff ont invit\u00e9 Jos\u00e9 Luis Garrido (IIM-CSIC) et moi-m\u00eame \u00e0 participer \u00e0 un article <strong>(dos Santos et col. 2017)<\/strong> qui a \u00e9tabli la classification taxonomique de <strong><em>Picocystis salinarum<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous avons contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 cette \u00e9tude en analysant la composition pigmentaire de <em>Picocystis salinarum<\/em> qui co\u00efncidait pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment avec les pigments de <em>Picocystis<\/em> sp. du lac Mono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et en combinant la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique, la morphologie et les analyses pigmentaires, <em>P. salinarum<\/em> a finalement \u00e9t\u00e9 incluse dans une nouvelle classe d&rsquo;algues vertes : <strong>Picocystophyceae<\/strong>.
