Elle s&rsquo;est produite au large de la c\u00f4te sud du Chili en mars 2015, d\u00e9taill\u00e9e par une superbe \u00e9tude de <strong>H\u00e4usserman et al. (2017)<\/strong> et un article populaire sur le web Hakai Magazine : \u00ab\u00a0<strong>Death by Killer Algae<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0. Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un article formidable avec des images a\u00e9riennes r\u00e9alis\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide de drones. En raison des nombreux fjords, \u00eeles et canaux, son littoral \u00e9quivaut \u00e0 deux fois la circonf\u00e9rence de la Terre, soit 80 000 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans ce territoire, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans le golfe de Penas (r\u00e9gion d&rsquo;Ays\u00e9n, entre 46\u00ba30&rsquo;S et 48\u00baS de latitude), une \u00e9tude de plong\u00e9e sur les invert\u00e9br\u00e9s, dirig\u00e9e par le Dr. Vreni H\u00e4usserman, a d\u00e9couvert en avril 2015 les premiers restes de rorquals bor\u00e9aux : une trentaine r\u00e9partis dans deux zones du golfe de Penas s\u00e9par\u00e9es par 200 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il n&rsquo;est pas rare que des baleines mortes soient d\u00e9couvertes dans la r\u00e9gion, mais rarement en si grand nombre et sur une p\u00e9riode aussi courte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leur position, couch\u00e9es sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 ou sur le dos, avec le ventre gonfl\u00e9, indique qu&rsquo;elles sont mortes dans des eaux proches et qu\u2019elles se sont ensuite \u00e9chou\u00e9es sur le rivage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Qu\u2019est ce qui a bien pu les tuer ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/balaenoptera.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/balaenoptera.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8613\" width=\"352\" height=\"319\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Images a\u00e9riennes de carcasses de rorqual bor\u00e9al document\u00e9es (Golfo de Penas). H\u00e4usserman, Source : Fig. 4 (H\u00e4usserman y col. 2017).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">H\u00e4usserman et son groupe sont des sp\u00e9cialistes des invert\u00e9br\u00e9s, et non du phytoplancton, si bien qu&rsquo;ils n&rsquo;ont pas tout de suite pens\u00e9 aux biotoxines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pourtant, la c\u00f4te sud du Chili est touch\u00e9e chaque ann\u00e9e par des prolif\u00e9rations de microalgues toxiques -avec le risque que cela comporte pour la sant\u00e9 publique, l&rsquo;\u00e9conomie locale et la faune marine-, c&rsquo;est pourquoi les autorit\u00e9s chiliennes m\u00e8nent des programmes de surveillance des \u00ab\u00a0mar\u00e9es rouges\u00a0\u00bb, par le biais d&rsquo;organismes tels que l\u2019Institut de D\u00e9veloppement des P\u00eaches (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.cl\/marearoja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Instituto de Fomento Pesquero&nbsp;; IFOP)<\/strong><\/a> et l\u2019Office National des P\u00eaches (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sernapesca.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Servicio Nacional de Pesca y Acuicultura&nbsp;; SERNAPESCA)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour d\u00e9couvrir l\u2019assassin, il fallait r\u00e9unir toutes les preuves sur la <em>sc\u00e8ne de crime<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quelques semaines plus tard, au mois de mai, une exp\u00e9dition commune entre le <strong>SERNAPESCA<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>la marine Chilienne<\/strong>&nbsp;et la police d\u2019investigation Chilienne&nbsp;<strong>(<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pdichile.cl\/cuentapublica\/2011\/web\/investigacion_criminal.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PDI<\/strong><\/a><strong>) <\/strong>a \u00e9t\u00e9 entreprise. Elle avait pour objectif de pr\u00e9lever des \u00e9chantillons de phytoplancton, ainsi que des \u00e9chantillons de baleines pour des \u00e9tudes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, des os de l&rsquo;oreille et des contenus stomacaux pour rechercher la trace d\u2019\u00e9ventuelles biotoxines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans cette vid\u00e9o, vous pouvez voir des images de l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillonnage. L&rsquo;odeur devait \u00eatre importante&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P3IbDUXJyJo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En juin, Vreni H\u00e4usserman, accompagn\u00e9e de sa coll\u00e8gue Carolina Gutstein (experte dans l\u2019analyse de fossiles ou \u00ab&nbsp;taphonomie&nbsp;\u00bb pour rechercher, entre autres, les causes des d\u00e9c\u00e8s) et d&rsquo;un \u00e9tudiant, ont survol\u00e9 la c\u00f4te pour compter le nombre de corps \u00e9chou\u00e9s dans le Golfe de Penas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ils avaient compt\u00e9 70 sp\u00e9cimens quand, au milieu du silence, quelqu&rsquo;un s&rsquo;est exclam\u00e9 : \u00ab\u00a0Oh, merde, c&rsquo;est un cauchemar\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ils ont recens\u00e9 343 carcasses de rorquals bor\u00e9aux (<em>Balaenoptera borealis<\/em>), et 17 carcasses appartenant \u00e0 d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces. Auteur : Pablo Salgado.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aucune des carcasses \u00e9tudi\u00e9es en mai 2015 ne pr\u00e9sentait de signes ext\u00e9rieurs de maladie, de dommages physiques (attaques de pr\u00e9dateurs comme les orques) ou de dommages dans les os des oreilles (dus \u00e0 des explosions). Ils ne sont pas morts de faim non plus, car ils poss\u00e9daient suffisamment de graisse et leur estomac \u00e9tait plein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se d&rsquo;une maladie virale ou bact\u00e9rienne ne peut \u00eatre exclue \u00e0 100% en raison du degr\u00e9 de d\u00e9composition des cadavres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D&rsquo;autres causes, telles que les dommages caus\u00e9s par une explosion sous-marine, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 exclues sur la base d\u2019un faisceau d\u2019indices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une mortalit\u00e9 massive synchronis\u00e9e (entre f\u00e9vrier et avril) sur une r\u00e9gion aussi vaste ne pouvait avoir qu&rsquo;une seule origine&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les analyses de toxines, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es sur les cadavres dans la zone et dans l&rsquo;estomac de 2 animaux, ont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence de toxines paralysantes (<strong>PST <\/strong>; Paralytic shellfish toxins) et de toxines amn\u00e9siques (<strong>ASP <\/strong>; Amnesic shellfish toxins).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les donn\u00e9es de surveillance des toxines disponibles en mars 2015, \u00e0 120 km au nord du Golfe de Penas, ont montr\u00e9 des niveaux de toxines paralysantes (saxitoxines) 10 fois sup\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 la normale, ainsi qu&rsquo;une pr\u00e9sence abondante du dinoflagell\u00e9 <em>Alexandrium catenella<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mais aucune toxine amn\u00e9sique (acide domo\u00efque) n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 retrouv\u00e9e dans ces \u00e9chantillons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au vu de tout cela, <strong>H\u00e4usserman et al. Source : <a href=\"http:\/\/smsg-falklands.org\/features\/15-ecology-of-lobster-krill\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/smsg-falklands.org\/features\/15-ecology-of-lobster-krill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shallow Marine Surveys Group<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le Golfe de Penas semble \u00eatre une zone d&rsquo;alimentation importante, surtout les ann\u00e9es o\u00f9 l&rsquo;une de leurs principales proies, la crevette grise (<em>Munida gregaria<\/em>, connue en anglais sous le nom de <em>lobster krill<\/em>), est abondante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce crustac\u00e9 forme de v\u00e9ritables \u00ab&nbsp;essaims&nbsp;\u00bb dans sa phase p\u00e9lagique, qui peuvent se nourrir de phytoplancton, y compris de dinoflagell\u00e9s toxiques comme <em>A. catenella<\/em>, accumulant ainsi leurs toxines et agissant comme un vecteur vers les niveaux trophiques sup\u00e9rieurs <strong>(McKenzie &amp; Harwood, 2014)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Un lien possible avec \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb et le changement climatique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quelques mois avant la d\u00e9couverte des \u00e9chouages de baleines (en septembre 2014), les conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques dans la r\u00e9gion \u00e9taient anormales et co\u00efncidaient avec le d\u00e9veloppement du plus grand ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb enregistr\u00e9 \u00e0 ce jour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nement chilien a co\u00efncid\u00e9 avec un autre cas de mortalit\u00e9 de baleines en Alaska (38 individus, dont des baleines \u00e0 bosse), mais \u00e9galement avec une prolif\u00e9ration massive et prolong\u00e9e de <em>Pseudo-nitzschia <\/em>(des diatom\u00e9es produisant de l&rsquo;acide domo\u00efque) lors d&rsquo;un r\u00e9chauffement anormal de l&rsquo;Oc\u00e9an Pacifique d\u00fb \u00e0 <a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/2016\/06\/californintoxication.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00abEl Ni\u00f1o\u00bb<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bears-and-fin-whale.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bears-and-fin-whale.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8765\" width=\"352\" height=\"211\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Des ours mangeant les restes d&rsquo;une baleine dans la baie de Larson (Alaska). Source : <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskafisheries.noaa.gov\/node\/30342\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/alaskafisheries.noaa.gov\/node\/30342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le lien entre les deux mortalit\u00e9s <strong>&lt;&lt;<\/strong> par les modifications induites dans l&rsquo;\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me marin par \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb sur les temp\u00e9ratures, les r\u00e9gimes de vent et les nutriments dans le Pacifique oriental <strong>&gt;&gt;<\/strong> a conduit \u00e0 penser que les grands mammif\u00e8res marins sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 victimes des effets du r\u00e9chauffement climatique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notamment parce que l&rsquo;on soup\u00e7onne que le r\u00e9chauffement climatique (li\u00e9 \u00e0 des facteurs anthropiques) pourrait \u00eatre l&rsquo;un des responsables de l&rsquo;augmentation de la fr\u00e9quence et de l&rsquo;intensit\u00e9 de \u00ab\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0\u00bb au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le d\u00e9veloppement des efflorescences toxiques peut passer inaper\u00e7u si nous ne surveillons pas l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an, mais les mammif\u00e8res marins sont tr\u00e8s sensibles aux modifications de cet \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me. C&rsquo;est pourquoi la biologiste marine Kathi Lefebvre (NOAA) les compare, <em>aux canaris anciennement utilis\u00e9s dans les mines de charbon pour d\u00e9tecter les \u00e9manations de gaz toxiques, <\/em>dans l&rsquo;article&nbsp;<strong>\u00abDeath by Killer Algae\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">N\u00e9anmoins, les mortalit\u00e9s de mammif\u00e8res marins dues aux biotoxines ne sont pas nouvelles.
