(Gerardo Olivares, 2016).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les \u00e9chouages de c\u00e9tac\u00e9s sont des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes myst\u00e9rieux et impressionnants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces \u00e9chouages sont myst\u00e9rieux parce qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;y a pas de cause unique pour les expliquer, et impressionnants parce qu&rsquo;ils touchent des animaux qui inspirent l&rsquo;admiration et pour lesquels nous avons une empathie toute particuli\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La plupart des \u00e9chouages concernent des odontoc\u00e8tes (c\u00e9tac\u00e9s \u00e0 dents), le sous-ordre auquel appartiennent les dauphins, les orques, les baleines \u00e0 bec et les cachalots. Par contre, les observations d&rsquo;\u00e9chouages de mystic\u00e8tes (baleines \u00e0 fanons) ont toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 rares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cela se justifie par le comportement social des odontoc\u00e8tes, qui ont tendance \u00e0 vivre en grands groupes, alors que les mystic\u00e8tes sont plut\u00f4t solitaires ou forment des groupes limit\u00e9s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En outre, les mystic\u00e8tes n&rsquo;utilisent pas l&rsquo;\u00e9cholocation pour naviguer, un \u00e9l\u00e9ment qui est \u00e9galement souvent mentionn\u00e9 pour expliquer les \u00e9chouages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, de nombreux \u00e9chouages et d\u00e9c\u00e8s de mystic\u00e8tes ont eu lieu. C&rsquo;est ce que nous verrons dans cet article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les raisons les plus courantes sont vari\u00e9es. Source : Wikimedia commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les plus grands \u00e9chouages de baleines mystic\u00e8tes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9s en Am\u00e9rique du Nord et du Sud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Par exemple, en 1999 et 2001, 283 et 386 \u00e9chouages ont \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9s sur la c\u00f4te nord-est du Pacifique, principalement des baleines grises adultes. Dans les deux cas, on a soup\u00e7onn\u00e9 des sympt\u00f4mes de malnutrition. <strong>(Rowntree et col. 2013)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quant aux d\u00e9c\u00e8s caus\u00e9s par les biotoxines, le seul cas confirm\u00e9 jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 r\u00e9cemment est survenu en 1987 \u00e0 Cape Cod (USA), avec la mort de 14 baleines \u00e0 bosse apr\u00e8s avoir ing\u00e9r\u00e9 des maquereaux (<em>Scomber scombrus<\/em>) contamin\u00e9s par des saxitoxines: des neurotoxines paralysantes produites dans la r\u00e9gion par des dinoflagell\u00e9s du genre <em>Alexandrium<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour que les carcasses de baleines atteignent la c\u00f4te, elles doivent \u00eatre mortes dans des zones peu profondes proches de la terre, car dans les eaux profondes, elles ont tendance \u00e0 couler et ne laissent aucune trace \u00e0 la surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, de nombreux \u00e9chouages de baleines ont eu lieu le long des c\u00f4tes de l&rsquo;Argentine et du Chili. Source: Wikimedia commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les c\u00f4tes de la P\u00e9ninsule de Vald\u00e9s, au nord de la Patagonie, en Argentine (42-43\u00ba de latitude sud), constituent une zone de reproduction pour les baleines franches australes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eh bien, entre les ann\u00e9es 2005-2014, une mortalit\u00e9 sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent a \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9e (649 sp\u00e9cimens au total), principalement des baleineaux de moins de 3 mois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les d\u00e9c\u00e8s s&rsquo;\u00e9talent sur plusieurs mois, et ont atteint un pic de 120 individus retrouv\u00e9s morts en 2012. Les femelles de ces baleines ne se reproduisent que tous les 3 ans. Avec de tels taux de natalit\u00e9, vous pouvez imaginer l&rsquo;impact de cette catastrophe, qui peut affecter le maintien d&rsquo;une esp\u00e8ce dont la chasse a r\u00e9duit sa population originale \u00e0 un faible 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une r\u00e9union d&rsquo;experts de la Commission baleini\u00e8re internationale (CBI) tenue en 2010 a permis d&rsquo;identifier trois hypoth\u00e8ses principales : la raret\u00e9 de la nourriture (krill de l&rsquo;Antarctique : <em>Euphausia superba<\/em>), la maladie et l&#8217;empoisonnement par des biotoxines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une quatri\u00e8me hypoth\u00e8se s&rsquo;y est ajout\u00e9e lors d&rsquo;une autre r\u00e9union de la CBI en 2014 : le stress caus\u00e9 par des go\u00e9lands (<em>Larus dominicanus<\/em>), qui attaquent les baleines pour se nourrir de leur peau et de leur graisse, provoquant des plaies ouvertes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8606\" width=\"360\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales.png 721w, https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales-705x532.png 705w, https:\/\/fitopasion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pszwhales-450x340.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Frustules de <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> dans les d\u00e9jections de baleines franches australes (<em>Eubalaena australis<\/em>) de la Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s. (2015).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parmi ces 4 hypoth\u00e8ses, l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se des biotoxines est celle qui se renforce \u00e0 la suite de r\u00e9centes \u00e9tudes scientifiques telles que \u00ab\u00a0Potentially toxic <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> species in plankton and fecal samples of <em>Eubalaena australis<\/em> from Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s calving ground, Argentina\u00a0\u00bb. <strong>(D\u2019Agostino et col., 2015)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces chercheurs ont d\u00e9couvert la pr\u00e9sence de nombreux frustules de diatom\u00e9es du genre <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> dans les excr\u00e9ments de baleines vivantes ou de carcasses, ainsi que dans des \u00e9chantillons de phytoplancton pendant la p\u00e9riode o\u00f9 les baleines se rendent \u00e0 Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le genre <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> comprend de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces qui produisent de l&rsquo;acide domo\u00efque, une puissante neurotoxine que les lecteurs de ce blog connaissent bien, et qui peut causer de graves dommages \u00e0 la faune marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>D\u2019Agostino et ses collaborateurs&nbsp;<\/strong>sugg\u00e8rent que le zooplancton, la nourriture des baleines, agirait comme vecteur de l&rsquo;acide domo\u00efque. La neurotoxine a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tect\u00e9e dans des \u00e9chantillons de zooplancton de la r\u00e9gion par d&rsquo;autres chercheurs. Les baleineaux seraient indirectement expos\u00e9s \u00e0 l&rsquo;acide domo\u00efque, par le biais du lait maternel et\/ou pendant la gestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De plus, certaines baleines, comme les baleines franches australes, pratiquent un type d&rsquo;alimentation appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0skim feeding\u00a0\u00bb dans lequel elles \u00e9cument la surface de l\u2019eau (comme une passoire qui retire la cr\u00e8me du lait). Les cha\u00eenes de <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> peuvent facilement d\u00e9passer 300 microns de longueur et pourraient \u00eatre filtr\u00e9es directement par les baleines pendant ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes d&rsquo;efflorescences. Source : British Phycological Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les baleines franches australes sont \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sentes lors des \u00e9pisodes toxiques (\u00ab&nbsp; Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning&nbsp;\u00bb ou toxines paralysantes) induits par <em>Alexandrium catenella<\/em> et associ\u00e9s aux interdictions d&rsquo;exploitation des coquillages. Les saxitoxines et l&rsquo;acide domo\u00efque ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tect\u00e9s dans les tissus de certains individus morts, mais \u00e0 des taux faibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En octobre 2010, 15 baleines de toutes classes d&rsquo;\u00e2ge (6 baleineaux, 7 juv\u00e9niles et 2 adultes) sont mortes, un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement associ\u00e9 aux efflorescences toxiques mais inhabituel dans la P\u00e9ninsule Vald\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les concentrations de <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> et d&rsquo;<em>A. catenella <\/em>\u00e9taient \u00e9lev\u00e9es \u00e0 cette p\u00e9riode. Et l&rsquo;alimentation par \u00ab\u00a0skim feeding\u00a0\u00bb avait \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9e chez des individus adultes \u00e0 cette p\u00e9riode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les observations satellite (Wilson et col. 2015) ont confirm\u00e9 l\u2019intensification des efflorescences printani\u00e8res de phytoplancton dans la r\u00e9gion, surtout depuis 2004, ce qui co\u00efncide avec la plupart des d\u00e9c\u00e8s :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&lt;&lt;649 <\/strong>baleines tu\u00e9es entre 2005-2014<strong>&gt;&gt; <\/strong>contre<strong> 194 <\/strong>au cours des 30 ann\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au cours d&rsquo;une de ces efflorescences, le chercheur argentin Mario Sironi a document\u00e9 l&rsquo;image d&rsquo;une mar\u00e9e verte de <em>Lepidodinium chlorophorum<\/em>, une esp\u00e8ce de dinoflagell\u00e9 non toxique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il ne semble pas que <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> fasse partie des prolif\u00e9rations de microalgues les plus intenses au printemps, mais son abondance a nettement augment\u00e9 au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie. De plus il existe une corr\u00e9lation positive entre 1) les enregistrements mensuels de la mortalit\u00e9s et 2) l&rsquo;abondance de <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em>. Source : Fig. 3 (H\u00e4usserman et al. 2017).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mi-avril 2015.<\/strong> Lors d&rsquo;une exp\u00e9dition de plong\u00e9e visant \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la faune benthique au nord du Golfe de Penas, des cadavres et des squelettes de baleines sont apparus aux yeux des plongeurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;inqui\u00e9tude suscit\u00e9e par cette d\u00e9couverte a entra\u00een\u00e9, quelques semaines plus tard, une exp\u00e9dition conjointe du SERNAPESCA (SERvicio NAcional de PESCA y acuicultura), de la marine chilienne et du PDI (Polic\u00eda De Investigaciones de Chile, Departamento de Investigaci\u00f3n Criminal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ils ont document\u00e9 par voies terrestre, maritime et a\u00e9rienne le pire cas de l&rsquo;histoire : la mort de 343 baleines bor\u00e9ales (<em>Balaenoptera borealis<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mais c&rsquo;est une longue histoire et je vous la raconterai dans le deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9pisode de <\/em><strong><em>Stranded things<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>R\u00e9f\u00e9rences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>D\u2019Agostino V.C. y col.
